These records consist of the correspondence and office files of the Secretary. Information includes correspondence with various state agencies, including the offices of the Attorney General and Lt. Governor, and inforamation from agencies under the responsibility of the Secretary including the Dept. of Veteran's Affairs, Dept. of General Services, Va. Retirement System, and Dept. of Personnel and Training. Also included in this series are the records of the African Nations Summit Joint Summit of the Southern Governor's Association and African Heads of State held in Richmond, September 19-22, 1993. Included are a list of attendees and biographical information (including photos), the briefing book, financial records and correspondence related to the development of the summit.

The Office of the Attorney General originated in medieval England. While representing the king in his courts, the Attorney General gradually assumed the role of legal advisor to the government and all its agencies. In Virginia, the first Attorney General was commissioned in 1643.
